Will this become the Ali/Frasier of our Era…

Even before the fight started last night while watching the pre-fight interviews I started having flashbacks of how divided the boxing world was one time before this when another loud mouth-publicly hated Champ was put up against America’s boy and fell too defeat. This was more a battle of good vs. evil fight hype than Bernard Hopkins vs. Jermain Taylor and as such, we may all have been duped by the craftiest double dealer in the game…no not Hopkins…Oscar De La Hoya. No matter in my eyes as the rematch will tell more truth than this stage show offered up as a fight. Remember now for a second who won the favor of the people in the end and who fell off the radar for decades too come. Could Hopkins be embraced by the boxing public? Anything is possible with a blistering redemption bout that will assure Hopkins another huge payday, thus setting up the rubber match setting him close to DLH money, and if he still has it in him he could finish his career at the same weight he started only hoping to go out holding all the belts!

One step back for two giant steps into a cozy retirement?

The realist in me says that Bernard Hopkins has been hanging with Oscar De La Hoya too much and let this one slip out of his grasp giving too little too late. I must be fair in my assessment in the fight I had Bernard down by 3 needing at the very least two knock downs in the final round to bring it even and was with him all the way to the last 22 seconds thinking he would pull out another Tito Trinidad finally punctuating the night with Jermain Taylor on the floor. This moment never came and that is why the conspiracy is already brewing within this die too the end nut hugging Hopkins fanatic. Never thought the day for excuses for “Executioner” would come but here is my best defense of what I saw over all in the fight…along with Bernard losing…yes I do feel he lost. I may now commit suicide like Lou’s brother…okay…I am over that!

Bernard Hopkins: Appreciate Him While You Can

I used the above quote to describe Bernard Hopkins last year, and I don’t apologize for the redundancy. When Bernard’s career is over as a boxer, that’s how I’ll remember him. Regardless of what occurs tonight in Las Vegas, Bernard Hopkins has tried to change the structure and function of boxing more than any fighter in the last decade. Like any activist, he’s slipped up and made mistakes, but the totality of his contribution far outweighs his transgressions.

Since the dawn of man, man has known battle. With this has come the rise and fall of champion warriors both for existence and entertainment as we are a people with taste for blood as long as it is not your own. Many Champions linger too long…as well many are never quite realized to their fullest. Youth has its advantages, advantages that often lead to disadvantages with over confidence however. As a young warrior comes too face the veteran, he must realize that the only thing in his favor is age and with this comes no room for error. Hopkins will be teaching…will Taylor learn or plummet?

Breaking Through the Hype for Hopkins Versus Taylor

Often times it's difficult to separate hype from reality as a pay per
view match approaches. This is generally true and usually proportional
to the size of the event promoted. This phenomenon can be seen in
recent fights such as DeLaHoya-Hopkins in 2004 and most recently
Mayweather-Gatti. Looking back I can remember the vast majority of
fans, writers, and pundits giving DLH no chance versus the great but
aging Hopkins. This of course changed after the 'show' began as one of
the biggest jobs of these promoters and the combatants alike is to
convince people that they are about to see a fight that could go
either way. And even though you'll have a tough time getting these
same people to admit their change of heart today, I can remember the
widespread indecision and late charge for betting on DLH. So what
substituted itself for common sense and tight rational? 'Promotion'
happened but that's not always necessarily a bad thing.
